School Meals: Free meals to stay despite low figures

Hull City Council says it will not halt the introduction of free school meals for all primary school pupils despite initial figures showing a drop in children eating the new healthier lunches.

The council announced its plan in February (Health News, 18-24 February) to start rolling out free school meals for all under-11s from April.

The first official take-up figures show that fewer pupils are eating the healthier meals since they were introduced in February. Only four out of 79 primaries and nurseries recorded increased numbers paying for school meals.

Councillor Colin Inglis, Labour leader of Hull City Council, said: "If children are used to processed and packaged food, it's going to take time to wean them off them."

The council is now listening to parents and pupils to help them revise the menus.
