Doctors feared the scheme would be scrapped as the result of a recentGovernment review of the 1.2bn revamp of Royal London and BartsHospitals in east London.
But, after a protest letter signed by 1,000 doctors, the Department ofHealth and the Treasury last week approved plans for the UK's biggestprivate-finance initiative hospital scheme, to be completed by 2016.
The new paediatric service, housed in the refurbished Royal LondonHospital, will be London's second largest. It will be within a dedicatedwomen's and children's unit.
