The Food Standards Agency (FSA) last week published proposals for a foodcompetency framework for young people and they are now out toconsultation.
Split into four age groups between those aged seven and 16, theproposals state what children should know about eating, buying andpreparing food.
Stephanie Valentine, education director at the British NutritionFoundation, who developed the proposals with the FSA, said: "This is thefirst time we've had competences championed by an official body. Theywill be used across Government, from the education and healthdepartments to examination agencies and the Healthy Schools programme,to look at what children should know by the age of 16."
She added the framework will also help to improve and standardiseteaching across the UK.
