Health News: Continence - National minimum standards unveiled

Children with disabilities can reach the same level of bladder control as their able peers, according to the first national minimum standards on the issue.

The standards are designed to help professionals develop the integratedpaediatric continence service set out in the children's national serviceframework.

The standards have been put together by continence experts for childrenwith physical and learning disabilities and published by the charityEducation and Resources for Improving Childhood Continence.

Penny Dobson, the charity's director, said children with special needsshould have a proper assessment and not just be given pads.

"We need to alert people to the fact that services should be availablewhen children are ready and this does not mean much later than if theydon't have a disability."
