
Nurses and midwives in the UK look set to face three-yearly checks from the end of 2015 under proposals being put forward. The Nursing and Midwifery Council wants to see patients, colleagues and employers give feedback on performance. Those deemed not up to scratch face being barred from working, reports the BBC.
The NSPCC has referred 34 potential cases of female genital mutilation (FGM) to the Metropolitan police as a result of calls to an anonymous helpline launched less than three months ago to help tackle the crime. John Cameron, head of the helpline, said the 93 calls received so far had come from members of the communities that practise FGM as well as education and healthcare professionals seeking advice, reports the Guardian. Meanwhile, Keir Starmer, the director of public prosecutions, confirmed that the Crown Prosecution Service is now considering whether to bring charges in five cases of suspected FGM.
