Daily roundup: Female genital mutilation, military schools and child health

A charity is to review how many women have undergone female genital mutilation, MPs call for improvements in education for military children, and the government has urged local authorities to sign a health pledge, all in the news today.

The number of women who have undergone female genital mutilation in England and Wales is to be reviewed by a charity. Equality Now plans to update the most recent figures from 2007, which suggested more than 66,000 women had been cut for cultural or religious reasons. In related news, the BBC reports that Unicef has published a report warning that 30m women world-wide face female genital mutilation over the next decade.

The government must do more to ensure the education of children whose parents work in the military does not suffer, a group of MPs has said. The call follows the publication of a report by the Defence Select Committee that showed mobile service children do not perform as well as non-mobile service children. Committee chair James Arbuthnot MP said: “The government should liaise with local authorities, the devolved administrations, and others responsible for providing education services to ensure that these children are given every opportunity to maximise their potential.”
