The Injury Minimisation Programme for Schools, which started in Oxford and is now active in 12 other cities, will soon be rolled out by St Mary's and Chelsea and Westminster hospitals to Year 6 pupils.
The programme has two stages. In the first, teachers give accident prevention lessons in schools, while in the second project trainers give training on basic first aid and life support skills to children and their parents in hospitals.
Project manager Reggie Marriage, who works for St Mary's NHS trust, said the programme targeted Year 6 pupils because they were at an age when they became "risk takers".
