Yet again, child protection services were in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons this month when Daniel Pelka's killers were convicted. Annie Hudson, chief executive of the College of Social Work and former director of children's services at Bristol City Council, answers questions on what to do in such circumstances.

What should senior managers consider when deciding how to initially respond when a child protection crisis story breaks?

Clear decisions should be made early on concerning what can and cannot be said, and what course of action should be taken to investigate the facts of the case, bearing in mind that local authorities have a duty of care to both service users and staff in their locality. Decisions should be made in collaboration with partner agencies, and a spokesperson should be nominated for each agency involved in the case.
