Child protection: The safeguarding squad

Although police are often the first service to be alerted to child abuse, they have to work closely with other agencies. Tristan Donovan spends a day with Barnet police to see how it works.

The Metropolitan Police's Child Abuse Investigation Command is thebiggest and busiest team of its kind in the UK, dealing with around90,000 allegations of child abuse every year. And while its headquartersin Vauxhall oversees operations London-wide, investigations intospecific cases are usually handled by one of 18 local teams spreadacross London.

Barnet Police Station is home to the team covering the boroughs ofBarnet and Enfield. Four out of five of the cases it handles originatefrom social services, but the station also gets many from schools,concerned neighbours or uniformed police officers. The team is made upof three smaller groups - two teams of detectives and a referrals desk,headed by detective sergeant Diane Lesley.
