The Anti-gun Culture Education Initiative is expected to start in February after a tendering process for the work is completed. Funded by the Home Office, the project will reach young people through various services, including youth centres.
Anna Bryan, project manager, said she hoped the project would run in some youth centres and pupil-referral centres. "We are looking at how to get youth workers involved," said Bryan. "After Christmas, we want to build links."
The organisations awarded contracts will decide on the methods to be used when the tendering process closes at the end of February. However, the Greater London Authority wants the educational package to be delivered by trained volunteers. "Exactly how the volunteers would be recruited has yet to be decided, but it may include peer groups," said Bryan.
