What is it? The Greggs Foundation breakfast club programme aims to help young people of primary school age who live in disadvantaged areas of the UK. It currently supports 191 breakfast clubs, helping more than 9,000 pupils in total.
Schools that are interested in opening a breakfast club with help from the fund must be able to show that at least 40 per cent of pupils qualify for free school meals and that the school serves a disadvantaged community. The school must also attract adult volunteers to help run the scheme and attendance at the club must be free.
How much is on offer? There is no set amount. Hillside Community Primary School in West Lancashire received £600 for its breakfast club, serving 45 young people, and Swalwell in Gateshead received £1,100.
What will it fund? When the Greggs Foundation awards a grant to a breakfast club, a commitment to the school is made for two years. In that period grants are provided for healthy food, as well as equipment to get the club started.
The grant can even be used for games and sports equipment to help children play together. Greggs also provides bread donations from the nearest shop.
When is the deadline? Applications can be made at any time via the website: www.greggsfoundation.org.uk
