General Election: Tories plan 200m vocational spend

The money would go to providers of vocational education, such as businesses, and would rise to 300m by the end of their term in office. The party hopes to get one in five 14- to 16-year-olds attending vocational education for two days a week.

Any money would be ring-fenced to ensure it is not spent on other school activities. Shadow education secretary Tim Collins told Young People Now the measure was designed to re-engage 14- to 16-year-olds in education.

But Liberal Democrat education spokesman Phil Willis said: "To simply offer uncosted bribes to colleges and employers to take disillusioned young people smacks of desperation. The Tories should recognise that Britain needs highly skilled people from all social backgrounds."
