General Election: Children at centre of Labour pledges

The Labour party has put children firmly at the centre of its bid for a third term in government.

"Your children with the best start," was one of six pledges unveiled by Tony Blair as he made his way to the party's spring conference in Gateshead.

Featured on a pocket-sized pledge card, the full version reads: "More choice over parental leave for mums and dads, more childcare for under-fives, and after school care for over-fives".

The other pledges cover heath, education, the economy, crime and immigration.

Campaigners said there was nothing new in the pledge but welcomed the fact that childcare was at the top of the political agenda. Although an election has not been formally called it is widely expected to take place on 5 May.
