FUNDING WATCH: Who's getting money and who's giving it - Welsh sports funding goes local

1 min read
The Sports Council for Wales is to cut back many of its National Lottery funded schemes following a continued decline in income, but is shifting its focus to smaller community projects.

The move to community projects could benefit sports schemes for children, such as Dragon Sport, launched in 2000 to encourage primary school children to play sport via improved provision in primary schools and after-school and community sport clubs. Sportlot Community Chest, which gives grants to grassroots sports projects, will also be brought to the fore.

The Council has enrolled two new ambassadors for Dragon Sport in the shape of BBC Wales TV presenters Jane Harvey and Rupert Moon (the former rugby union international), who will encourage children to keep fit and healthy.

Although funding for the Dragon scheme is fixed, small grants of £750 a time for children's sports are available through the council's Community Chest scheme. Tighter new tighter criteria mean projects in deprived areas, projects that benefit children and young people, and projects based on school sites with strong school or community links will be favoured.
