The DfES is asking local authorities to apply for a share of up to 3m to support the development of Multi-dimensional Treatment Foster Care schemes, targeted at looked-after children aged 12 to 16 with complex needs. Councils with responsibility for social services have until 3 March to submit bids.
Fostering Network chief executive Robert Tapsfield welcomed the announcement but said it was vital to ensure ongoing financial support. "We've seen examples of schemes in the past that have proved very successful, but in the end have had to close owing to lack of funding," he said.
Providing treatment in a family setting can be the best way of helping young people deal with deep emotional and behavioural problems, but carers need a lot of professional support, he said.
