What is it? John Lyon was a yeoman farmer from the village of Preston in Harrow and the founder of Harrow School in 1572. John Lyon's Charity is part of the Harrow Foundation. The charity's main policy is to enhance the conditions of life of young people through education.
How much is on offer? Since 1992 the charity has distributed some £30m at an average of £17,000 per grant to a range of services for young people. Small grants of up to £5,000 are available, and there is no limit on grants available from the main grants programme.
What will it fund? Projects that support education and training, particularly for young adults; broaden horizons and encourage an appreciation of the value of cultural diversity; provide childcare and support for parents; enhance recreation through sport, youth clubs and play schemes; develop new opportunities for young people and help young people achieve their full potential. Past services funded include youth clubs, arts projects, counselling, childcare and parental support schemes, sports and academic bursaries and scholarships.
