FUNDING: Tax threat to local authority services

Children's services are under threat because of government pressure to minimise rises in council tax, says the Local Government Association.

Its warning came as Wandsworth Council cut funding to a number of services, including voluntary sector holiday play schemes, saying it was under pressure from the government to keep down council tax rates.

Parents are expected to pay the full cost of using the services.

Wandsworth councillors have also decided to scrap the children's playbus, the mobile toy library, inflatable toy provision and minibus outings used by the borough's disabled children. Statutory services, such as child protection, will not be affected.

The effort will save the council £70,000 a year - £47,000 from salaries and the remainder from running costs. Two workers will be made redundant.
