Youth centres under threat as council seeks to save £650,000

Three youth centres and 10 youth projects are under threat in a London borough, with the local authority planning to cut its youth services budget by more than 75 per cent.

The London Borough of Hounslow has opened a public consultation on proposals to save £650,000 from the current annual budget of £862,000, leaving just £212,000 for remaining services.

The council is proposing to deliver youth services from alternative sites in the future, such as community buildings. It will also reduce reliance on buildings by providing more outreach, street-based youth work.

The remaining funding will be directed towards young people considered to be the most vulnerable, such as those with emotional and mental wellbeing needs, those at risk of anti-social behaviour and substance misuse, and young carers.

Services it plans to retain include a project supporting children and young people living in Hounslow barracks, a youth counselling team, and the Duke of Edinburgh scheme.
