Funding: Inspections - Ofsted checks do not reduce stress

Joint inspections of children's services have helped promote integrated working, but have not cut inspection workloads.

Ofsted's Review of the Impact of Inspection, published last week, concluded the multi-inspectorate approach used for joint area reviews(JARs) is the right one. Providers found feedback from inspectorshelpful and said producing a joint self-assessment helped thedevelopment of integrated planning.

But the report said providers "do not feel that there has been areduction in stress and workload compared to the inspections JARs havereplaced".

There was also no reduction in the inspection burden by running JARsalongside corporate assessment, the Audit Commission-led inspectionsthat look at councils' entire performances.
