In his first keynote speech since he took over from Tony Blair, Gordon Brown promised 117m from April 2008 "as we move to a national youth community service".
Despite Brown's choice of language, a spokesman for the Cabinet Office said the move represented continued investment in current youth volunteering initiatives, rather than a change in direction. He also denied there were any plans to introduce any form of compulsory community service.
The 117m has been allocated to youth volunteering charity v. It includes 72.6m that was announced last month for v's National Youth Volunteering Programme (YPN, 27 June-3 July, p4). This scheme will allow organisations to bid for funding for volunteering schemes.
