Aim: To engage young people who are, or have been, involved in street crime in positive activities and give them positive role models
Ricky McCalla was a successful dancer and choreographer in the music business. But his life changed in 2005 when he was shot in the neck in an attempted carjacking. "When I came out of hospital I thought I'd do something more positive," he says. "I started doing a music project at a church and a youth centre. I applied to the Prince's Trust and they gave me a £500 grant to get some equipment."
The project acted as a drop-in centre for local young people. There was no real structure to the activities, but young people came in to learn music skills, write lyrics and make recordings.
