'Frontline for managers' gets backing

3 mins read Management Leadership Social Care
Innovation grant will hone social work managers' skills, but critics want more widespread training investment.

Concerns about standards of management and poor supervision of staff within children's social care departments have been a recurring theme of Ofsted inspection reports of struggling councils.

In light of ongoing concerns, the Department for Education has awarded £1.8m of funding from its £100m children's social care innovation programme to try to rectify the situation, part of more than £40m granted thus far (see box). The money will go to Frontline, which already runs a fast-track training scheme for high-flying graduates dubbed "Teach First for social work", so that it can establish a new initiative called Firstline.

It will be trialled initially with 40 managers from existing Frontline local authorities, across Greater London and Greater Manchester. Its aim is to develop team managers as well as others who directly manage practice to become "outstanding leaders of practice".
