ENGLAND
The Department of Health is responsible for creating policy on health issues in England. In 2006, a reconfiguration took place. As part of this change the number of strategic health authorities (SHAs) was reduced from 28 to 10.
These SHAs are the link between the government and local health services. SHAs are responsible for developing plans for improving health services in their area and making sure local health services are performing well.
Primary care trusts (PCTs) provide community-based services, while hospitals across England are run by NHS trusts. Mental health trusts provide mental health services in hospitals and the community.
SCOTLAND
The Scottish government decides national objectives for health services. It provides a statutory and financial framework for NHS Scotland and holds it to account for its performance.
