Four Islands - Children's and youth services

2 mins read
Tristan Donovan and Sarah Cooper examine children's and youth services in the crown dependencies of Jersey, Guernsey, the Isle of Man and the overseas territory of the Falkland Islands. Four Nations returns next week.

FALKLAND ISLANDS

The Falklands has a mix of government, private and voluntary sector pre-school services. There is one primary and one secondary school, both in the capital Stanley. Primary-age pupils in remote areas get one-to-one tuition from travelling teachers for two out of every six weeks and are taught over the phone in the other four. Pupils from more remote areas board until leaving at 16. The islands follow the English national curriculum. All youth services are run by voluntary groups such as the Scouts. Basic health services are provided on the islands but for specialist treatment children must travel to Chile, the UK or Uruguay. Social services are run in the same way as in England.
