Foundation stage guidelines revised

The government has produced an updated version of its Early Years Foundation Stage guidance, which clarifies matters such as staff ratios and giving medicine to children.

The new version of the curriculum gives services a degree of flexibility regarding staff ratios at break times, requiring staff to be on the premises but accepting that they may not be working directly with children.

It also reiterates the need for organised and clearly written records regarding any prescribed medicines given to children and maintains the flexibility of nurseries to distribute non-prescribed medication. Other changes include replacing the word "curriculum" with "practice".

Richard House, senior lecturer in psychotherapy and counselling at Roehampton University and a member of the early years campaign group OpenEye, said: "These changes are mostly minor. They clarify a number of areas and tighten up the language.
