Foster carers want leaving-age to rise

Social Care
Foster carers descended on Parliament on Monday (16 June) to urge MPs to extend the age when young people can leave care.

The Fostering Network helped carers from across England meet their local MPs to raise concerns about young people having to leave foster care too young.

The government is planning a pilot extending the care-leaving age from 18 to 21, but the Fostering Network says a trial project is not needed and the increase should be introduced nationally as soon as possible.

A coalition of 12 children's charities has also sent an open letter to Children's Secretary Ed Balls calling on the government to give young people the chance to stay in care longer if they want. The Fostering Network, Barnardo's, NCB, NCH and the British Association for Adoption & Fostering are among the charities that have produced the letter.
