Forest schools: Education outdoors

Freeing children from the confines of school to explore the wild can bring a host of benefits. Joanna Sayers investigates.

The crisp air explodes with the sound of children's voices, brightlycoloured outdoor clothing catches the eye, and little hands tinglingwith cold and excitement clutch at twigs and leaves. With hands on hipsand an important look on his face, four-year-old Jack makes anannouncement: "I've seen a dinosaur."

He quickly continues to describe how the T-Rex (as it has now beenlabelled) is "brown like mud, with long legs and horns". When questionedby his teachers, he emphatically denies it could be anything else and,with great importance, and a told-you-so look on his face, says again"it's a dinosaur," as one of the woodland deer casually wanders intoview, oblivious to its newly acquired star status.
