Financial education in schools

An Ofsted report published last week found major gaps in the teaching of financial matters to young people. Sarah Cooper examines what policies are being put in place across the UK to increase financial awareness.

ENGLAND

In July 2007 the government announced the introduction of a non-statutory curriculum area for secondary school pupils called economic wellbeing and financial capability. This will start in September 2008.

It has committed £11.5m to support personal financial education in primary and secondary schools for three years, from September 2008.

In 2005 the government made a commitment to include aspects of personal finance education in mathematics from 2010.

An Ofsted report published last week suggests the government should provide guidance on how to find curriculum time for the subject.

SCOTLAND

In January 2008 the Scottish government announced that school children would be taught skills in money management as part of Curriculum for Excellence, its new approach to learning.
