Feltham to test out restraint technique

1 min read

A Home Office spokesman said the methods would be piloted before the end of the year.

"The new techniques are similar to the old ones, except where young people would previously have been held in a lock, they are now looking to use holds," said the spokesman. "The idea is that it is more comfortable for the person who is being restrained."

The spokesman would not comment on whether the pilot was related to the death of 15-year-old Gareth Myatt in April this year (YPN, 23-29 June, p4). Gareth died while being restrained at Rainsbrook Secure Training Centre in Warwickshire.

He added that the techniques would be used for three months and then evaluated. If the pilot is successful, the techniques will be extended to other young offender institutions.
