Fears over rise in job-seekers

The recession has caused a surge in the number of highly qualified workers applying for early years jobs, leading to fears that this will undermine attempts to tackle low pay.

Steve Alexander, chief executive of the Pre-school Learning Alliance'said the recession had led to "a more plentiful supply" ofwell-qualified applicants. But he warned: "Flooding the market withapplicants won't make the problem (of low pay) go away."

Purnima Tanuku, chief executive of the National Day NurseriesAssociation, said the low pay issue must "remain high priority".
