The Reader's Digest survey polled parents on their preferences thencompared their answers against data for 408 local authority areas.Reading is bottom of the heap with a high crime rate and average GCSEresults at state schools. The best-scoring places tended to be ruralareas with small towns.
Parents told Reader's Digest they wanted good state schools, goodhospitals, plenty of other families nearby, a low flood risk, warm dryweather, low crime, local universities, affordable housing, highemployment and to be close to the sea, a national park and a majorcity.
Labour councillor Pete Ruhemann, the lead member for children's servicesat Reading Borough Council, said: "The methodology used seems totallybizarre. A number of the factors are things that no local authority cando anything about."
