Resolution, the organisation that represents family lawyers, said there was a crisis in obtaining high-quality medical expert advice in the family courts.
Experts' fees had increased so much recently because there was a "greater demand than can be met by those experts who are willing to undertake the work".
In its response to the Legal Services Commission's consultation on the use of expert witnesses, which closed this week, it said problems had become "particularly acute" since the introduction of the judicial protocol in November 2003, as well as the impact of the Angela Cannings case.
David Ennis, head of committees at the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, said there should be regional teams of experts based in the NHS.
