Family justice: Committee set up to simplify family law

A new government body that aims to introduce consistency across the family justice system could be up and running by this autumn.

The Family Procedure Rule Committee, established by the Courts Act 2003, will make rules of court for the family division of the High Court and for family cases in county, district and magistrates' courts.

The Department for Constitutional Affairs is currently recruiting for members of the committee and hopes to have them in place by September.

A spokesman for the department said: "The committee is about renewing the focus on the court user rather than the legal professional. Family procedures will be simplified and made easier to understand. Procedures vary quite considerably across different courts."
