FAMILY: Funds help fathers get closer to sons

1 min read

The funding comes from the Home Office's family policy unit. It will help the YMCA develop its Dads & Lads programme, which aims to strengthen father figure roles in young people's lives. The scheme is estimated to have worked with up to 700 fathers so far.

As well as appointing a dedicated worker on the scheme for 20 hours a week, training will be given to local authorities and charities.

A members-only web site will allow youth workers to share experiences and best practice. Workers will eventually be able to download parenting materials and short videos.

Dirk Uitterdijk, development adviser for YMCA England's parenting education and support unit, said that the funding would also be used for projects that included girls, as shown by Kingston YMCA's Dads, Lads & Lasses project.
