Family Courts: Cafcass to improve staff safety following threats from parents

1 min read
The Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (Cafcass) is in talks with the Royal Mail to make sure that practitioners' home addresses are kept confidential.

The move follows growing concerns over threats made by parents disgruntled with decisions made in the family courts.

Chief executive Anthony Douglas said the organisation also planned to issue staff with advice to improve their personal safety.

He has written to Royal Mail highlighting that the nature of Cafcass's work means that a small minority of parents can become highly aggressive or violent towards staff.

He said two recent incidents highlighted the dangers facing Cafcass staff.

One was a threat made in court, while the other, which involved a threat to kill, is now in the hands of the police.

He stressed that the threats came from disgruntled individuals rather than pressure groups.
