Probation union Napo, which represents around 750 of the service'sstaff, plans to write to the government watchdog urging it to examineCafcass's operations.
The union's call came after Cafcass's chief executive, Anthony Douglas, wrote to junior children's minister Maria Eagle asking for extra moneyfollowing the discovery that the service faced a shortfall of up to4m in the current financial year.
Cafcass blames the shortfall on increased demand for its services andthe lack of a budget increase for 2005/06.
Harry Fletcher, assistant general secretary of Napo, said frontlineservices could be threatened if Cafcass had to rein in spending. "Wewant the audit office to find out if this is a resource or mismanagementissue," he said.
