But they are split on whether this means a child should spend half their time living with one parent and half their time living with another, the exclusive poll for Children Now reveals.
In an indication of how complicated and confusing the issue can be, almost three quarters of those questioned by BMRB Social Research also said the law should favour the parent who has been mainly responsible for bringing up the child. And two thirds thought the legal system often unfairly denied access to fathers when parents separate.
The survey follows the publication of the Government's green paper on family separation, which rejected the idea of an automatic 50:50 division of a child's time between two parents.
