The quality of life for one-parent families is improving, according to the government's latest annual survey of UK families.

Although lone parents are still more likely to be out of work and on low incomes than two-parent families, the figures for 2006 show small but significant improvements since 2005.

Also, from 2005 to 2006 there was a drop from 38 to 36 per cent in the number of lone parents in the bottom fifth of earners. During the same period, couples in this income group rose from 10 to 11 per cent.
