Since 1999 the Government has undertaken annual surveys to shed light onthe circumstances of families with children. Originally concerned solelywith lone parent families and couples on low or moderate incomes, thestudy was broadened in 2001 to take in all families with dependentchildren.
The Department for Work and Pensions published the latest snapshot - the2005 Families and Children Study - at the end of May.
The study reveals that one quarter of children in the UK live in a loneparent family, with the remaining three-quarters in couple families.Children in lone parent families are more likely to be an only child, tohave a mother under 25, to live in social housing and to live in afamily on a low income.
