Faith-based abuse: Professionals urged to seek out advice

Professionals who suspect a child is the victim of faith-based abuse should seek strong advice, recommends an advisory group.

Responding to the Government's consultation, Safeguarding Children fromAbuse Linked to a Belief in Spirit Possession, the Churches' ChildProtection Advisory Service said seeking advice is the vital issue.

In its response, the service said: "The concern is that theprofessionals may not know where to go for such advice."

The response of the British Association of Social Workers added: "Theguidance would benefit from a clearer statement that in tackling thistype of abuse it is important for practitioners to receive theappropriate cultural awareness training."
