Social Care news: Faith-based Child Abuse - Attitudes still a barrier to protection

1 min read
Children could be put at risk of abuse if a "them versus us" attitude remains between statutory authorities and some faith communities, a leading expert has warned.

David Pearson, executive director of the Churches' Child ProtectionAdvisory Service, believes authorities and faith groups need to worktogether to help prevent child abuse before it happens.

Later this year the Government is due to release guidelines on spiritpossession, but Pearson believes this is not enough.

He said: "Guidelines are important, but guidelines alone do not protecta single child."

According to Pearson preventative work needs to be done to stop abusefrom happening, instead of children's services responding to concerns ona case-by-case basis. "There has to be an engagement with the communitythat raised the concern," he said.

Pearson is hoping that once the consultation paper is released more workwill be done to engage faith communities.
