Extended Schools: Research calls for funding rethink

New funding models may be needed if extended schools are to become the norm, according to the first official evaluation of the pilot project in 25 local authorities.

Researchers from the universities of Newcastle, Manchester and Brighton concluded that if extended schools are to become more widespread, long-term plans and co-ordinated funding streams are essential.

But they stressed that extended schools were having "positive effects" and provided a "good return on a relatively low level of additional funding".

The evidence showed improvements in achievement and behaviour.

A separate evaluation of the project in Brighton and Hove showed finding the right staff for extended schools was difficult.
