Researchers from the universities of Newcastle, Manchester and Brighton concluded that if extended schools are to become more widespread, long-term plans and co-ordinated funding streams are essential.
But they stressed that extended schools were having "positive effects" and provided a "good return on a relatively low level of additional funding".
The evidence showed improvements in achievement and behaviour.
A separate evaluation of the project in Brighton and Hove showed finding the right staff for extended schools was difficult.
