The long-awaited extended schools prospectus confirms that child health and social care services will be provided free of charge but it encourages schools to demand payment for all other services.
It states: "Start-up funding will be available to schools to help them in developing extended services. However, services will need to be developed in such a way as to ensure they are affordable and sustainable. This will involve devising a clear charging policy for those activities that should attract a fee."
Children Now can reveal that ministers shelved restrictions in early drafts of the prospectus on the scope that schools would have to charge. The changes mean schools will no longer be expected to provide study support free of charge and they will find it easier to charge children from neighbouring schools for taking part in community activities.
