Extended Schools: Lottery gives 5m to local authorities

The cash will go to local education authorities or schools that do not get significant extended schools funding from the Department for Education and Skills. Authorities must have extensively consulted young people on how they want to spend the money.

Some areas are spending the money on primary schools, some are spending it at secondary level, and others are using it to improve out-of-school provision, including refurbishing youth clubs.

Torbay Council is using some of its 148,000 award to set up an underage nightclub. Margaret Dennison, the director of children's services, said: "The funding came as a very pleasant surprise. We hope that our under-18s nightclub will help to cut teenage drinking."
