YOUTH JUSTICE: Scotland ploughs 5m more into reducing youthcrime

The extra 5m funding was greeted warmly by local authorities, which will control the purse strings, and organisations in the youth justice field.

Keith Simpson, head of service development at Sacro, a voluntary organisation that works to reduce crime, said: "We very much welcome the funding. Many services are already at capacity and this money will allow an increase in that. We are pleased that the executive has honoured its commitment to give more funding."

Scotland's justice minister, Cathy Jamieson, said the extra cash should help expand the work of the country's 32 youth justice teams, the Scottish equivalent of youth offending teams.
