Extended schools: Call to be more like supermarkets

1 min read
Extended schools should be more like supermarkets, according to a respected extended school leader.

Bob Mitchell, vice principal of Beauchamp College, near Leicester, makesthe claim in a flyer promoting his school's extended services. Hesuggests that extended schools adopt some of the principles behindsupermarkets such as Tesco and Asda.

The flyer says: "It is worth considering the 'extended offer' that thesesupermarkets have facilitated: the move to 24-hour opening; personalisedcontact with customers and product research; the ever widening range ofservices from dry cleaning and pharmacies to life insurance and]e-shopping as well as customised training for all their staff no matterwhat their function."

It goes on: "Surely, much of the ethos within these profit-drivenmotives can be applied to state schools wishing to extend theircommunity offer and ensure that the Every Child Matters ethos is appliedas widely and productively as possible."
