What is the key to sustainable extended services once the Government's start-up cash has been spent? Jo Stephenson looks at 10 surefire methods of extending the life of activities for your community.

The Government is putting 840m into developing extended schoolsup to 2008. None of that cash is ringfenced so schools and localauthorities have a free rein on how it's spent. But the big question iswhat happens next? The 840m is clearly labelled "start-up" cashwith no guarantees of future funding. And the Government has made itclear it expects schools to charge for services to make themsustainable.

It's a solution not everyone likes. "Once you start charging, you startexcluding people," claims Barrie Birch, deputy head at Queen's ParkCommunity School in Brent, north London.

Like others who've embraced extended schools, he's worried. "There isthis wonderful policy of opening schools up for all but it could all diebecause of money falling through," he says.
