Analysis: Extended schools - Sustainability fears for grand plan

3 mins read
The Government's prospectus for extended schools is still being finalised and has yet to be announced. However, Children Now can give an exclusive insight having obtained a draft copy. David Singleton reports on sector response and financial concerns.

The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) is still putting the final touches to its extended schools prospectus, but a draft version obtained by Children Now gives a clear idea of what will be in the plan.

The leaked document confirms our report last week that the department has developed a checklist of "core services" for schools, based on ideas introduced in its five-year strategy. But the department is holding back from making provision of these services compulsory. Instead, the draft refers to "services which we would like to see available in or through all schools".

When it is published in the next few weeks, the prospectus will also have plenty to say on the funding and management of extended schools.
