Exclusion: Preventative work needs fund pledge

Children's minister Margaret Hodge has been asked by delegates at the first online social exclusion conference to guarantee funding for preventative work.

One delegate asked the minister to confirm that funding for preventative work, such as that resourced through the Children's Fund, would be ring-fenced in pooled budgets and not diverted into "heavy-end" activities such as child protection.

Hodge has yet to answer, but in her online presentation said: "Often, preventative initiatives in children's services fizzle out when funding stops. We must sustain the preventative approach."

She pledged to provide "stability and continuity" when allocations for the 2005/06 Children's Fund are confirmed in August, when guidance on the mainstreaming of the Children's Fund to children's trusts is published.
