Every child matters: Tackling racism is key to staying safe

Tackling racism should be a priority when trying to achieve the staying safe outcome of the Every Child Matters reforms, argued research published last week.

Just Justice, a study by The Children's Society, examined theexperiences of young people in the criminal justice system. It foundthat racism within the youth justice system has had a profound impact onyoung people and must be tackled accordingly.

Many of the young people interviewed talked of racist encounters withprofessionals and reported examples of blatant disregard and inaction byauthority figures in responding to racism.

The report called on agencies to take joint action to protect childrenfrom racist abuse and discrimination.

Liz Lovell, co-author and policy advisor at The Children's Society'said: "There is a need to look at children's racist experiences andredress that. Agencies should plan activities and monitor the work thatis being done to address racism under the staying safe outcome of EveryChild Matters."
